JoAnn and I first met when we taught at Forest High School in Ocala, Florida. I can still see that science teacher pushing her cart full of lab materials down the hall to get to her next class. She shared a utility closet with me and that began a friendship that continued for the past 35 years.
We were able to immediately connect as “cowgirls”, although I didn’t sit a horse near as long as she did. She actually rode and worked her family ranch. I learned to ride to impress my friends and family. She often chuckled and commented about my “Texas roots.”
JoAnn was always positive and upbeat, even when circumstances were not so pleasant. She was an inspiration and role model to me as I watched how she dealt with the complexities of both personal and professional situations.
Our families ended up in North Carolina, fairly close to each other, after living in Florida for most of our careers. Our friendship continued and I was glad to have gotten to meet her daughter, Laurie and granddaughter, Kara, and especially--Scotty. JoAnn was crazy about him and shared some personal stories that attested to their great love and devotion for each other. Scotty has been a wonderful caregiver and her best true love.
I was so proud to get to see such public evidence of her talents when I visited the Sheridan, Wyoming Visitor’s Center a few years ago. Her name is displayed all over that place as a major contributor to the local history which she spent years researching. What a living memorial it is to her and one that few people may be aware of.
No matter what life threw her way, JoAnn always had a smile and could laugh at almost anything. I will carry that vision with me forever and cherish the laughs we shared. She was supportive and encouraging when I needed it the most and I am honored to have known JoAnn Boyd Scott and call her friend. I will miss you, sweet lady.
