I never met Alan, but in reading the wonderful tribute he composed, I recognize many of his characteristics, energy, and easy with making frineds in the college freshman I met at UVM in (gulp ...) 1983.
Anya -- I am very sorry for you family's loss. I trust that your father's spirit will find its way to a happy place where he will continue to make friends.

Uncle Alan as he will always be known to myself and family was an exceptional person. He was my mother's younger brother and from an early age he was recognised by myself as a great character. He set great store in encouraging education and work ethic with all our family.
We spent many happy times together during his frequent visits to Manchester from many worldwide destinations and conversely in more recent times we were able to take advantage of the wonderful facilities now available in Florida.
His visits to Manchester often meant he met many of my extended family and fiends and was universally admired for his personality and stories from a long and interesting life.
Eventually he became not only Uncle Alan but graduated to Great Uncle Alan and furthermore Great Great Uncle Alan.
He will always remain in our thoughts and hearts.
