Bessie L. Duncan
Bessie L. Duncan nee Lawracy was born on September 29, 1915 in Brooklyn, NY to the late James and Bessie Lawracy nee Barnes. She passed away on October 5, 2012 in Ormond Beach, FL at the age of 97 years, 0 months, and 7 days.
Bessie moved to Florida in 1953 from Ohio. She will be remembered as having an infectious smile, unwavering faith, and being loved by all who met her. Bessie was a member of Harbor Baptist Church in Ormond Beach. She founded the group 55 and Alive along with her husband at Alliance Church in Ormond Beach. Bessie was a very accomplished pianist, even playing the organ at the Ormond Hotel. She and her late husband Willard spread the gospel and many nursing homes throughout the Ormond Beach area, and she cherished all the commendations they received for their volunteer work. Bessie loved collecting dolls, working crossword puzzles, and scrapbooking.
In addition to her parents, Bessie is preceded in death by her Husband Rev. Willard H. Duncan of 60 years, daughters, Martha Hogue and Mary Dionne, and her son Benjamin Duncan.
She is survived by her sons, James Duncan and wife Jenny of Belize, Paul Duncan of FL, Thomas Duncan of WV, and Timothy Duncan and wife Joyce of VA, daughter, Julie Wilbur of TN, fourteen grandchildren, and thirty great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bessie’s name to Vitas Hospice of Volusia-Flagler 2381 Mason Avenue Suite 100 Daytona Beach, FL 32117
A memorial service will be held by Bessie’s family on December 23, 2012 at 6:00 PM at Harbor Baptist Church 428 Tomoka Ave. Ormond Beach, FL 32174.
