Donald Wayne Estes' Obituary
Donald Wayne Estes, 94, of Palm Coast, FL passed away peacefully on August 16, 2025. Don was born in Allen, KS on September 15, 1930 to Frank and Florence Estes.
Don proudly served in the US Navy and graduated from Washburn University where he was also awarded an honorary doctorate. Don began working at Ryder Truck Rental in1959 as an account manager and steadily rose to the rank of President of Ryder in 1982. Don's philanthropic and caring spirit drove him to serve on many boards including Florida Memorial College, Jackie Robinson Foundation, Chairman of the Board of The Salvation Army in Miami, FL.
To his grandchildren and great grandchildren, he was known as Papa, a jokester and loving leader of a big family. Whether it was leading the young ones around his North Carolina cattle ranch or putting them to work he inspired them to make the most out of life. He embodied the belief that you can work hard, enjoy life, and make a difference by just bringing a smile to someone’s face.
Don is survived by his loving wife Arlene Hahn Estes and daughters Gayla Turner (John) and Julie Estes Hayes, 7 grandchildren – Sara, Andy (Kati), Brad, Caroline (Grayson), Katie, Kevin, and Kelly (Greg), as well as 5 great grandchildren Blakely, Addie, Karli, Bryce and Zena. Don was preceded in death by his daughter Jan Estes, parents, siblings Bill, Betty, and Mary.
The family will be celebrating his life privately. Donations in honor of Don’s life may be made payable to the 'Washburn University Foundation' and mailed to 1700 College Ave, Topeka, KS 66621 PLEASE NOTE In memo section: "Jan Estes Scholarship for Social Work"
