Douglas R Mahoney's Obituary
Douglas Richard Mahoney, devoted husband, loving father and father-in-law, cherished brother and uncle, and loyal friend, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2025, surrounded by his family. He faced a long illness with courage, dignity and quiet strength, remaining steadfast to the very end.
Born in Concord, New Hampshire, Doug was the beloved son of Bernice “Bunny” and Benjamin Mahoney. He attended Concord High School before proudly enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. In 1971, Doug married his love Carol, beginning a partnership that would span 54 years and countless shared memories. Together they made their home in Loudon, New Hampshire, where they raised their daughter, Amanda. In 2007, Doug and Carol retired to Flagler Beach, Florida, embracing warmer days and a close-knit community they quickly came to cherish.
Doug took great pride in his lifetime of military service. After beginning his career with the United States Marine Corps, he continued his dedication to service in the New Hampshire National Guard and the United States Army, ultimately retiring in 1998 with the rank of Sergeant Major. In addition to his military achievements, Doug furthered his education by earning college degrees from Franklin Pierce College and UNH Manchester.
A lifelong athlete, Doug took up golf with a passion as an adult. He found joy, camaraderie and countless friendships on the course in both New Hampshire and Florida. He continued to golf despite health challenges, much to the amusement of medical staff who learned to schedule appointments around his cherished tee times. Doug generously shared his knowledge of the game, improving the swings—and spirits—of many friends and family members. His well-loved hand-me-down clubs live on, with many “Doug clubs” still being swung in his honor and memory.
In the Flagler Beach community, Doug was known as a kind and dependable neighbor, always ready to lend a helping hand and quietly look out for those around him. He delighted in daily visits from neighborhood dogs and never failed to have their favorite treats ready. A proud New England sports fan living in Florida, Doug wore his loyalties with good humor and pride, from his hats and shirts to the flags on his home and golf cart.
Above all else, Doug treasured his family. Doug will be deeply missed by his beloved wife of 54 years, Carol (Brown) Mahoney; his daughter, Amanda (Mahoney) Ponti and his son-in-law, John Ponti. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law Ron and Martha Mahoney, Bob and Linda Mahoney, Sam Mahoney, his sister Mary Lou (Mahoney) Tanguay, sisters-in-law Barbara (Brown) Rice and Linda (Brown) Wright, many loving nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart.
A Celebration of Life will be held on January 11, 2026 in Concord, New Hampshire. Please contact the family for details if you would like to attend.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the 408J Fund at the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation https://give.nhcf.org/408JFund, created to honor the life and legacy of Doug’s late niece, Jennifer Perkins, to assist those most in need across New Hampshire. The family also invites those who wish to honor Doug’s memory through donations to local food banks or by giving whole blood or platelets to a local blood bank.
Doug will be remembered for his kindness, steady presence, love of family and the many lives he quietly touched. His memory will live on in stories shared, clubs swung and hearts forever grateful to have known him.
