Frederick A. Kleinfelder II's Obituary
Frederick Adam Kleinfelder II, 71, passed away on October 17, 2017.
Fred’s life began February 28, 1946 in Jacksonville, FL.  Born to Fred and Mary Ellyn Kleinfelder, Fred had a great childhood and took up the game of golf.
As a 1964 Ribault High School graduate, Fred pursued a career in golf course maintenance and attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.  In 1966 Fred entered the United States Coast Guard, where he had many adventures on the high seas.  Fred returned to north Florida in 1970 and entered the inaugural class of Turf Grass Management at Lake City Community College.
Upon graduation, Fred worked at several courses before landing a job at Inlet Beach Golf Course, now part of the TPC in Ponte Vedra Beach.  In 1977 Fred married Shelley Wehrle and in 1979 they moved to Palm Coast to take over the Palm Harbor Golf Course for ITT Community Development Corp, build a home and start a family.  In the following years Fred was the construction superintendent for Pine Lakes Country Club, Matanzas Woods Golf Course, Hammock Dunes Links Course, Cypress Knoll Golf Course, Grand Haven Country Club and Ocean Hammock Golf Course.  He personally worked with designers Arnold Palmer, Ed Seay, Gary Player, Tom Fazio and Jack Nicklaus.  His new designation was Director of Golf Course Maintenance.
Fred continued playing golf, winning many tournaments and working on his handicap.  He loved his family, playing softball, umpiring Little League and was a lifelong fan of his beloved Gators. He was a member of North Florida Superintendents Assoc, Golf Course Superintendents of America and Trinity Presbyterian Church.
Fred is survived by his wife Shelley, sons John and Patrick, daughter-in-law Summer, grandchildren Lexie, Drew and Adam, his sister Lynn Gardner and niece and nephews Joe, Vicky and Scott and their families.
Memorial contributions may be given in Fred’s name to the Proverbs Scholarship Fund at Trinity Presbyterian Church or the Flagler Palm Coast High School Athletic Department.
There will be a celebration of Fred’s life at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 156 Florida Park Drive in Palm Coast on Sunday, October 22 at 1:30 p.m.
