Gloria Amparo Alvarez's Obituary
Gloria Amparo Alvarez, 89, of Hobe Sound, FL passed away on Wednesday, November 5, 2025. Gloria was born on September 26, 1936, to Virgilio Garcia Perez and Enma Garcia Soto in Cubulco, Baja Verapaz, Guatemala. Her father died shortly thereafter and she went to live with her grandmother for a while and then later, with various aunts and uncles, and cousins.
At the age of 19, she left Guatemala to be a nanny for family friends in Washington DC. During her first visit, she met George Henry Alvarez but returned to Guatemala shortly after. She returned to DC later that year, dated George, and the two were married on May 3, 1958.
Gloria gave birth to two children, George and Clarissa, and lost a third child which always made her feel very sad. Shortly after the birth of her daughter, the family moved to Sterling VA, where they stayed for almost 40 years. During that time, Gloria held a variety of positions, as an Accounts Receivable clerk, baker, customer service rep for VISA, lab technician, airline worker and more.
After the children left home, George and Gloria traveled extensively, owing largely to a $25 airfare to anywhere retiree benefit from United Airlines. They also kept a timeshare in Cancun Mexico and visited regularly. Gloria had a great love for her 6 grandchildren and enjoyed babysitting, cooking holiday dinners for them, and visits from them as young adults in later years.
In 2004, George and Gloria moved to Hobe Sound, FL. George passed in 2007 and Gloria remained in Hobe Sound until a few months before she passed. During that time she enjoyed traveling, walking and gardening as well as various community activities. At the age of 88, she began to exhibit signs of forgetfulness, which rapidly deteriorated into profound memory loss and dementia. Her excellent health deteriorated as well to the very end of her life.
Gloria is survived by her son George and daughter-in-law Roseann, her daughter Clarissa Peters and grandchildren Michael and Matthew Stuart; and Jack, Peter, Bethany and Bobby Alvarez.
