Gordon L. Hankins' Obituary
Gordon L. Hankins, 93, passed away on July 24, 2017, with family by his side. He was born in Effingham, Illinois and graduated from Effingham High School in 1942. He then entered in the Navy from February 1943 till being discharged in December 1945. He was a gunner’s mate aboard the U.S.S. Hilary P. Jones. On August 26th 1946, the Secretary of the Navy awarded the Navy Unit Commendation to the U.S.S. Hilary P. Jones for extremely meritorious service displayed by her crew in support of military operations against enemy forces off San Remo, Italy and Port Maurizio. Italy from September 17th and 18th 1944. He worked for Ford Motor Company from October 22nd 1959 until January 1st 1985.
He was preceded in death by his parents Art and Vera Hankins, Brother Lloyd Hankins, Sisters Wanda Martin , Marion Zehner, Faye Birch and Shirley Arnold.
Gordon is survived by his wife of 74 years Erma, brothers Melvin Hankins and Larry Hankins, sisters Kay Whitaker and Linda Rose, daughters Gloria Shearer, Melody Patton, son Roger Hankins, granddaughters Brooke Jones, Nicole Shearer, Kristen Poynts, grandsons Craig Jones and Kyle Hankins, and five great grandchildren.
