Hermann was my friend and an interesting gentleman to have a conversation with on almost any topic.
He and I were almost the same age, me being a few months older.
He was notably frugal and decidedly conservative in his politics. His demeanor was that of an older European gentleman. In all our conversations his service in the US Navy never came up. I to was a Navy Veteran, lord knows where our conversation could have gone.
Six years ago my wife Madhu had emergency heart surgery. I got a letter from Hermann offering support and advising me that he “Stands in Solidarity” with us in our moment of need.
Lynn, I’m aware that Hermann could be a little difficult at times, but when you were in France with the girls a few years ago, he shared with me how much he missed you and how he was looking forward to your return.
