James Peter Godette Sr's Obituary
James Peter Godette, Sr. was born on June 15, 1930 in Times Square, New York. He entered into eternal rest on April 24th, 2025 in Palm Coast, Florida. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 37 years, Selma (née Kempner). He survived all his siblings, George Godette, Ernie Godette, Carol Bruno (née Godette), Eugene Godette, Eddie Godette and Billy Godette. He was a loving father to his children, Gabrielle Nitti (née Godette) of New Jersey, James Peter Godette, Jr. and wife, Almut, of Palm Coast. He had six grandchildren, Jonathan and Harry Nitti of New Jersey, Madeleine, Mark, Christian and Juliana Godette of Palm Coast whom he adored and were "made to order" for him.
Among his many careers were shoe shine boy, car mechanic and elevator operator, where he met Selma. He was a barber then purchased a New York City taxi medallion in 1971. He proudly shared that he was known as the "vacuum cleaner" amongst fellow cabbies, out maneuvering other drivers for a fare. He told amazing stories about all the different and famous people he met.
He could fix anything and was resourceful in creating the "right tool for the job." At 7 years old he made his own shoe shine stand and wagon to carry food home for his family and neighbors and always made his own shoes.
In 1973, he moved his young family to Oceanside, Long Island to give them a better life in the suburbs. For the last three years of his life, he lived with his son's family in Palm Coast and treasured being so close to his grandchildren.
He was very well-liked and a friend to many. He loved life and always said that he "got his money's worth."
A celebration of life may take place at a later date in the privacy of his surviving family.
