Lawrence Shattuck Jones' Obituary
Lawrence Shattuck Jones, (83), Captain of S/V Flying Cloud in St Marys, Georgia, passed away
on February 4th, 2023.
Lawrence, fondly known as Larry and “Papa”, was born to Rev. Vernon and Beatrice Jones on
June 16th, 1939 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was raised in Dixon, Illinois and gradated from
Dixon High School in 1957 and immediately joined the USMC.
After proudly serving in the Marine Corps for 4 years, he enrolled in flight school in Tulsa,
Oklahoma where he earned many aviation ratings to fly as a corporate pilot. During this time,
he married his high school sweetheart, Rosemary Schuster in 1963. He joined Eastern Air Lines
in 1966 and flew with EAL for 23 years, the last 8 years as a respected Captain.
His next chapter began internationally crewing on sailboats, accumulating ocean hours for his
Nautical Captains license. In 2000, he moved aboard S/V Flying Cloud with his loving wife/
First Mate. After many adventures and travels together, their last port stop was St. Mary’s,
Georgia.
Lawrence is survived by his wife Rosemary and five children, Laurie (Giuseppe) Santoro, Mark,
Michael (Michele), Joseph (Karen), and Jennifer. Grandfather of Shannon, Matthew, Brandy,
Devan, Katherine, and Benjamin. Great grandfather of Evelyn Rose. Predeceased by his step-
brother, Michael and sister, Carole.
