Mary Virginia Atkins' Obituary
Mary Virginia Atkins, known fondly as Virginia or Ginny, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2024, in Ormond Beach, Florida, at the age of 70. Born on July 27, 1954, in Evansville, Indiana, she was the beloved daughter of Robert Atkins and Virginia Scott “Scottie” Atkins.
Ginny was a passionate nature lover, educator, and fierce advocate for women’s rights. After earning her undergraduate degree from Stetson University, she went on to receive her Master’s degree in social work from Florida State University. Her commitment to education was evident in her role as a substitute teacher for Volusia County schools, where she inspired countless students with her love for learning and the natural world.
In addition to her work in education, Ginny was a dedicated political activist, always striving for social justice and equality. Her passion for activism extended beyond the classroom and into her community, where she tirelessly championed the causes she believed in.
Ginny is survived by her loving husband, Paul J. Rebmann; half-brother Gary Stampfli of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida; niece Linda Montgomery (Mark) of Evansville, Indiana; and nephews Robert DeArmond of Evansville and Reginald DeArmond of Newburgh, Indiana. She is also remembered by her cousin Wayne (Connie) Scott of Newburg, Indiana.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Scottie Atkins; her half-sister Carol Atkins DeArmond; and her step-brother Kirk Wallace.
Ginny's spirit will live on through her many contributions to education and her unwavering dedication to making the world a better place. In her memory, donations can be made to Planned Parenthood, ActBlue, or the Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery—causes that reflect her enduring values and passions.
A celebration of Ginny’s life will be held at a later date, allowing family and friends to honor her legacy of love, compassion, and advocacy. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know her.
Ginny will be laid to rest at Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery Wednesday, November 6, 2024 at 2pm.
