Michael Dean "Spur" Balsam's Obituary
With heavy hearts and love-filled memories, we announce the passing of Michael Dean “Spur” Balsam, who rode his last ride on April 27, 2025, at the age of 71. Born March 10, 1954, in Rochester, New York, to Eleanor (Jurs) and Bernard Balsam, Mike — lovingly known by many as “Spur” — lived a full-throttle life fueled by passion, loyalty, laughter, and the open road.
Mike married the love of his life, Christina (Crump) Hutchins, on May 27, 2006, in Jacksonville, Florida. Together they built a blended family that was the joy of his world. He is survived by his devoted wife Chris; his daughter Eva Ward (Sean); stepsons Joshua Hutchins (Stephanie) and Joe Hutchins (Carrie); stepdaughter Stephanie Trimble (Jake); and his brother Steve Balsam (Debbie). Mike was a proud and loving grandfather to Delia, Harlynn, Joshua Jr., Kailey, Kinley, Grayson, Evan, Breah, Landen, and Eleanora, and great-grandfather to Skylar and Xavier.
He now reunites in heaven with his parents; his beloved son, Michael D. Balsam, Jr.; his brother David Balsam; and dear friend Greg Goodberlet.
Mike was a true original — a biker with a soft heart, a creative soul, and a mischievous grin. He could often be found cruising on his motorcycle, wind in his hair, soul wide open. Riding wasn't just a hobby for Mike — it was freedom, peace, and connection. His beloved dog, Nikki Pearl, was always by his side, his constant companion and comfort.
Whether it was cutting grass on his riding lawnmower (a retirement dream he made a daily joy), drawing cartoon characters with remarkable skill, or playing the drums and harmonica with passion, Mike lived to create, laugh, and tinker. He even souped up a lawnmower for racing — a perfect symbol of his unique blend of humor and horsepower.
Mike found joy in the rumble of a boat engine, the calm of open water, and the unconditional love of animals. If he saw a stray, you could bet it was going home with him. His heart had room for them all.
Music was another constant thread — he could often be found singing or tapping along to Eddie Money’s Shakin, Susan Tedeschi, or Stevie Ray Vaughan’s Pride and Joy.
A true entrepreneur, Mike built a successful career from the ground up. He began in carpet installation, then went on to own and operate Northern Neck Flooring and Balsams Ceramic and Marble. His hands worked hard, and his work left a lasting legacy in the homes and hearts of many.
Mike was a loyal friend — the kind of guy who'd give you the shirt off his back or a place to crash without question. His dearest friends, Mark Payne (Cathy), Craig Curley (Linda), Marcia Goodberlet, Pops, and Russ Corado, will never forget his friendship, his laugh, and his fierce love.
The family wishes to extend their deepest thanks to Gentiva Hospice and their compassionate nurses and aides, especially Carolyn Biagi, Dorothy Hammontree, Valerie Wapelhorst, and Donna Kaye, as well as Heritage Funeral and Cremation Services for their care and kindness.
A Celebration of Life will be held on a later date, where stories will be shared, laughter encouraged, and engines likely revved in his honor.
Ride on, Mike — ride on, Spur. You were truly one of a kind — a biker, a builder, a dreamer, and a deeply loved man. May the road rise to meet you, and may the wind always be at your back.
