Oh my, I just found out that I lost my first true love from 9th grade through college. We met at a bus stop waiting to take us to LaReine and Bishop McNamara high schools. We went to dances at his school and the Catholic brothers had to separate us for dancing too close! We reconnected at Oxon Hill High School where he took me to my prom.
I loved his family and spent a lot of time with them and on trips to his grandparent’s home on the Chesapeake Bay. We even took a trip to Punksatawney, PA to see the groundhog celebration. We went to rock concerts together and we both loved The Rolling Stones.
Although we started out at different colleges but ended up at U of MD taking classes together including a scuba class b/c Mike had dreams of becoming a marine biologist. Although I married someone else, Mike was there to help me through when the marriage ended.
When I moved to San Francisco in 1982, Mike came to visit after the Loma Prieta earthquake because there was a lot of construction work. Unfortunately some bad decisions forced him
to go home.
I saw him again as I stayed in touch with Danette and Terri. This time he was in a hospital in Flagler Beach near where I was living. I met his wife in that room. I was sad to see he was in ill health due to choices he made and we all spoke about things he could do to have a better quality of life. I stayed for about an hour and left. Phone calls to his cell were not returned, I imagine because of his deteriorating condition. Danette sent me a text through FB saying it was almost a year that he died (I was taken by surprise with this news) so I looked it up and am now leaving this message.
I had so many great times in my youth with this man and his family. I always thought Mike reminded me of Paul McCartney. So handsome. Great smile. We learned what young love was and I’m forever grateful that he was my first love! He’s now in a much better place with the angels. Blessings to his family and extended family.
