Roberto Gonzalez Sr.'s Obituary
Roberto Gonzalez was born on December 2, 1938, in Guayama Puerto Rico. Roberto was the 5th of 7 siblings born to Francisco Gonzalez and Genoveva Vasquez. Roberto was affectionately known as “Tae” short for Chocolate, in his younger years and was adored by his siblings Rafael Gonzalez, Raquel Gonzalez, Luis Gonzalez, Francisco Gonzalez, Jeda DeJesus and Wilfredo Gonzalez. The siblings were born to humble beginnings and a home filled with love.
Roberto and his siblings migrated to Manhattan, New York in search for better opportunities. He attended Patrick Henry Junior High School and Metropolitan Vocational High School in Manhattan, New York. Roberto graduated in June of 1958 with a concentration in Maritime Trades. He began his career as a Merchant Marine working on cargo ships as a chef, which awarded the opportunity to travel the world visiting numerous countries. In April of 1963 Roberto enlisted in the United States Army completing his boot camp training at Fort Lewis in Seattle, Washington. Later in his career he moved to Ft. Gordon Military Base where he trained as a communication specialist. After his military service Roberto began his career as an entrepreneur, operating his own food truck.
Roberto married the love of his life Mary Ann Blackman at City Hall in Manhattan on April 23rd, 1966, and were blessed with 4 children, Robert Gonzalez Jr., Marcus Gonzalez, Bryan Gonzalez, and Renee Gonzalez. He loved his children and shared his passion for music, baseball, and food. Roberto loved to dance and was the life of the party. He was a kind, happy, honest, caring, and fun spirited man who went above and beyond to help others. Roberto was known as a father figure to many and affectionately know as, “Uncle Bob” to many nieces and nephews.
Roberto is survived by; his lovely wife Mary Ann Blackman, 4 children -(Robert, Marcus, Bryan, &Renee), 5 grandchildren - (Kiara, Anaya, Javiel, Alijah, & Leah), Brother -Wilfredo Gonzalez and his many nieces, nephews, and close friends. We celebrate his life, his love, his presence, and his legacy forever and ever!!
