Stewart O. Manthey's Obituary
Stewart O. Manthey, Jr.
August 12, 1939-June 6, 2024
Stewart followed his wife of over 60 years to his eternal reward just 6 short months after her death. He suffered from dementia for the past several years, and his physical health declined quickly over the last few weeks.
Stewart was born and raised in Bloomfield NJ. He graduated from Upsala College and served in the National Guard. He met his future bride, Alice Kroll, in the 6th grade. They married in 1963 and raised 4 children in Wayne, NJ, where they were active parishioners at Wayne Presbyterian Church. Stewart’s career path as an accountant gravitated towards organizations that provided philanthropy and services to the poor or underprivileged. Stops along that journey included employment with The American Bible Society followed by many years at The Christian Herald Association in Chappaqua, New York which ran the Bowery Mission in NYC and Mont Lawn Camp in Pennsylvania.
Stew and Alice retired to Palm Coast, FL in 2005 and joined the faith community of Palm Coast Bible Church. Both avid golfers, they explored the country, playing golf along the way. An annual travel odyssey to escape the hot summers of Florida put many miles behind them, and they had lots of great adventures. Stewart and Alice enjoyed a long life together sharing common interests including enjoying live music and history, strong community ties, and many special, lifelong friendships.
Stewart’s dedication to his family as husband, father, provider and leader was his mission right up to his last day. As well, his deep faith in God and sterling character were inspirational, and will leave a lasting impression on his family and friends.
Stewart is survived by Kristen Manthey-Tayler (Mark) of Succasunna, NJ; Brian (Margie) Manthey of Otisco, NY; Alison Manthey of Salida, CO; grandchildren Jack, Eric, and Jensen Tayler; Tyler and Shane Manthey; Vasey and Lily Stephens.
Pre-deceased by his parents Gertrude and Stu Manthey; his loving wife of 60 years, Alice Stella Manthey; his sister Virginia Waller; and daughter Marilyn Manthey, who was born with Cornelia de Lange Syndrome, a rare congenital defect, which brought many developmental challenges and took her life in February 2000 at the age of 29.
Please pray for our family as we grieve this deep loss. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to the Cornelia de Lange Foundation, www.cdlsusa.org Stewart will be inurned in New Jersey in the near future. Heritage Funeral and Cremation Service of Bunnell, FL is assisting the family with arrangements. www.HeritageFlagler.com
