Sylvia Arlene Lauer's Obituary
Sylvia A. Lauer, 89, of Flagler Beach, Florida died peacefully on Sunday, August 6, 2023 at the Stuart F Meyer Hospice House in Palm Coast, Florida. She was born on May 31, 1934 in Chicago, Illinois to John and Helen (nee Suslowicz) Michalski.
Sylvia attended school at Saint Fidelis elementary school, Tuley High School and Jones Commercial High School. She met her future husband, Donald Lauer, in 1950 on a blind date ice skating in Humboldt Park.
After graduation, she worked as a secretary at Marsh McLennan. Don and Sylvia married on October 23, 1954. She immediately took a civil service exam so she could join Don at Kinross Air Force Base in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, where he was stationed. They moved back to Chicago, where she worked as a secretary at IS Berlin. She resigned in 1959 and became a homemaker raising two children, Heidi and Erich. She returned to work in 1973 at Magnaflux as a strain gauge technician. She also started her own secretarial service company called Early Start. She soon began work at Cahners Publishing as the administrative assistant to the publisher. She retired in 2005.
In 2014. she and Don moved to Flagler Beach, Florida. Sylvia enjoyed sailing, crocheting, biking, camping, hiking, tennis, sewing, word games and going out with friends. She loved animals, particularly cats; and especially her beloved, ‘Sweetie’.
Sylvia is survived by her husband, Don, her daughter Heidi (Brad) Moss, her son Erich (Noelle Colletta), and her grandchildren Anna and Max.
She is preceded in death by her mother and father Helen and John Michalski and her sister, Louise (Robert) Baker.
