Thelma Mae Doutt's Obituary
Thelma Mae Laird Doutt, age 89, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2026. She was born on March 26, 1937, in Union City and spent many years living in Waterford before retiring to Bunnell. She was preceded in death by the love of her life and devoted husband of 65 years, Harold Edward Doutt.
Thelma was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, teacher, and friend whose gentle spirit touched everyone who knew her. She dedicated her early years to being a stay-at-home mother, lovingly raising her children and caring for her family. After her children were grown, she worked for several years as a secretary following her retirement to Florida.
She is survived by her three children: Scot E. Doutt, Scheri A. Doutt, and John D. Doutt; her granddaughter, Norida Fetzner, and Norida’s husband, Jacob Fetzner; John D. Doutt’s wife, Jeannette Doutt, and their children, Nicole Doutt and Andrews Doutt; and her cherished great-grandchildren, Hailey Fetzner, Jacob Fetzner, and Oliver Fetzner.
Thelma had many gifts and passions throughout her life. She loved painting, teaching ceramics, music, animals, and bird watching. As a child, she took piano lessons and performed in recitals, carrying her love of music throughout her life. Yet above all else, her greatest joy was serving the Lord. She deeply loved teaching youth group and Sunday school and never missed an opportunity to share her faith and tell others about God’s love.
Anyone who met Thelma loved her. She had a gentle and meek spirit, loved everyone she encountered, and made people feel welcomed, valued, and cared for. Her warmth, kindness, and unwavering faith left a lasting impression on countless lives.
One of her favorite sayings was, “Laugh and the world laughs with you, cry and you cry alone.” Her favorite Bible verse was Psalm 24:8–10:
“Who is this King of glory?
The Lord strong and mighty,
the Lord mighty in battle.
Lift up your heads, O ye gates;
even lift them up, ye everlasting doors;
and the King of glory shall come in.
Who is this King of glory?
The Lord of hosts,
he is the King of glory.”
Thelma’s legacy of faith, love, gentleness, and compassion will live on in all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
