William John Markey's Obituary
William J “Bill” Markey passed to eternal rest on October 26, 2016 after a short illness. He was born on May 19, 1927 in New York City where he would go on to meet his wife Florence (Mickey), to whom he would be married for 61 years until her passing in 2011. Bill served in the European Theater in the Army Air Corps during World War II, and was honorably discharged from active duty in 1947, and the Reserves in 1950. He went on to serve on the Nassau County Police Department in NY, where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant before retiring in 1976.
After Bill retired, he continued to pursue his passion for law enforcement, and helping the public in general, by joining the St Clair County (Missouri) Sherriff’s department holding the position of Chief Deputy and Jail Administrator. He also worked with the El Dorado Missouri and Stockton Missouri Police departments in various capacities. During this time, he also was a certified EMT and Volunteer Fireman.
Bill also had a love of agriculture, and spent many of his retirement years as a “gentleman farmer” in Collins, Missouri. Bill was most proud, however, of his family, and the closeness they all maintain despite the distance they might live from each other.
Bill is survived by his six children: Bill (Gail) Markey of New Smyrna Beach, FL, Kathy Boyes of Tampa, FL, Maureen (Ron) Dill of Tampa, FL, Kevin (Patty) Markey of Prescott AZ, Darren (Renee) Markey of Germantown Hills, IL, and Brian Markey of Ingleside, IL. Bill is also survived by his ten Grandchildren, five Great Grandchildren, and many Nieces and Nephews.
A funeral Mass was held on October 29 at Church Of The Epiphany in Port Orange, FL. Interment will be at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery.
