Charles Lombard Cobb's Obituary
Charlie Lombard Cobb, 77, of Port Orange, FL passed away on August 8, 2023. He was
born on September 12, 1945, in Augusta, Georgia, to parents Dr. Ty Cobb, Jr. and Mary
Dunn Cobb, and was named for his paternal grandmother, Charlie Lombard Cobb,
whom Charlie dearly loved. He spent his early years in Dublin, Georgia, but when his
father passed away when Charlie was 7, his mother and the three children moved to
Daytona Beach, Florida, to be close to her family.
Charlie attended North Ridgewood, Lenox, Ortona, and Seabreeze High schools. In
high school, he excelled in 3 sports and was offered a college scholarship to play
basketball at Florida State University and accepted a scholarship to play football at
Georgia Tech. Soon after graduating from GT, he joined the US Army and served from
1969 - 1971, serving one year in Vietnam. His duty in Vietnam took him into the jungle
at times, implanting sensor devices to be monitored for moving metal or ground
vibrations. His exposure to Agent Orange on these missions is the presumed cause of
the multiple myeloma cancer which led to his death. During his service, he earned a
Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars for achievement. After his military discharge, he
began his work in mortgage banking, and then was hired by State Farm Insurance
Company to become an agent in Edgewater, FL. He operated his agency for 27 years
before retiring in December, 2008. Retirement plans were short lived, because his
cancer was diagnosed in early 2010, and most of his time was spent getting treatment
at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. While in business, he was very active in civic groups,
community organization’s boards, volunteer work, and church leadership. A famous
American, Will Rogers, once made the statement, “I never met a man I didn’t like”.
Everyone who knew Charlie would say, “There was not a person Charlie Cobb met who
didn’t like him”. He had an engaging smile and made everyone who met him feel they
had been friends for years. He was thoughtful, caring, generous, and a true Southern
gentleman. He will be greatly missed! He was predeceased by both parents and his
older brother Ty, and is survived by his wife, Peggy, his sister Peggy Cobb Schug
(John), son David Cobb, daughter Laura Cobb, his stepson Kent Wetherell (Edie), and
seven grandchildren (Emily and Ty Wetherell; Cadence, Sydney and Kelsey Cobb; and
Andrew and Ashlyn Triolo).
A Memorial Gathering is being held Friday, September 8, 2023, from 2:00 to 4:30 pm at
the Lakeside Community Center in the Port Orange City Center, 1999 City Center Circle, Port Orange, Fl 32129
